How Does an Ice Maker in a Fridge Work?
Ice had to be created manually before mechanized ice producers, by pouring water into a mold and freezing it. A similar procedure is used by the ice maker in your freezer, except it is automated.
1- Once connected to a power and water source, the ice maker cycle should begin automatically (i.e. the plumbing line connected to the back of your refrigerator).
2- To fill the ice mold with water, an electrical signal is sent to a water valve at the start of the cycle. The freezer then begins to freeze the water. When an inbuilt thermostat detects that the cubes have reached 5-9 degrees Fahrenheit, a signal is delivered to stop the process.
3- After the cubes have been formed, a heated coil is used to remove them from the molds. The ejector blades on the ice maker are then used to force them out of the molds and into the collection tray.
4- The tray is separated from the dispenser at the front of the machine by a shaft, which opens when the lever or button (depending on the model) is pressed down. This cycle will continue until the ice maker’s front-mounted shut-off arm signals that the ice cubes have reached their maximum capacity.
Because this is a complicated process with many interdependent processes, a malfunctioning ice maker could be caused by a variety of malfunctioning mechanisms.
Why isn’t my ice maker making ice?
There are a variety of reasons why an ice maker may not be working properly, with some solutions being easier to implement than others. It’s possible that the ice maker shut-off arm is broken or has been switched off by accident.
